Framing advice and care of your purchase

Usually all watercolours are painted on location and feature a lose edge almost unique to this artist.

Mats are cut to overlay the surrounding Arches paper to approximately 15cms and at base 20cms to include the pencil signature etc.

Large watercolours behind glass are best in heavy frames or in light aluminium with reinforced L plate corners.

Use clear quality picture glass never non reflecting glass. A mat allows the painting to breath: ie. contract according to humidity and weather in your home. A mounted painting could have considerable water in it at any time so should not be in contact with the glass - the air space created by the mat reduces condensation which if in touch with the paint will run or smudge. The whole large sheet of watercolour paper under the matt reduces the need to use hinges. Never glue a painting down.

Conservation mounting means that mat boards or backing board are acid free. unless a barrier paper is also used. Paper used is French: normally 640/M2 a very heavy Arches Aquarelle which will hold considerable water when working in hot climate subjects. Never display any watercolours in direct sunlight. Framing or painting onto cheap wood pulp paper or boards results in wood spores developing small brown stains.
